Wave Reading Response Question

Hi There,

I guess I am the first person to post a discussion question for Wave? Yeah. So, as not much has happened so far in the book, I expect that this discussion will be kind of short... Anyways, here it is.

"What do you think Eric Walters wants the readers to learn when Sam, the Mother, and the Father go on the elephant ride up to the Temple with the Buddha? Please explain your thinking using examples from the text, or a personal experience."

My response to the question is "I think Eric Walters wants the readers to learn that if you were willing to think about things enough, you may be able to find out what you never knew you could learn. For example, when Sam looks at the statue of the Buddha and thinks about what the Buddha looks like he had discovered, he compares it's face to the Mona Lisa and makes a connection with their calm facial expression.

The Ethical Gift Assignment

Hello,  fabulous followers and others!

In this assignment, we have $100 (hypothetically, we don't actually have $100) and we must choose a gift (or a few) from an organization (or two).  These gifts would have gone to a developing country in need of whatever ethical gift you have chosen.  For example, say I have decided to choose supplies for a classroom. I would then shop around at all four organizations (Oxfam, Plan Canada, World Vision, or Salvation Army). Once I find the best price, I would "purchase" it. It's quite simple. That's the assignment for the blog, but we have also decided to do a "Spare Change Drive" to actually raise money  and buy an ethical gift for a developing country. When we figure the grand total, we will combine the classes and choose a gift (or a few) to purchase! Anyways, on with the assignment.

The organisations that I have chosen for the assignment is Plan Canada and Oxfam (I really don't like Salvation Army for many reasons, and World Vision's prices were dangerously high). I chose these organizations because they have the best prices, and seem like reliable organizations. For one of my ethical gifts, I have chosen to plant 50 trees for $35 (from Oxfam). This benifits a village by giving fruit, and giving shade for farming and people, plus it's a long term solution for said things. Secondly, I have chosen to give a family 3 baby chicks for $15 (from Plan Canada). This benifits a family because, once the chicks have grown they can be used for breeding, amd eggs (which provides income). Lastly, I have chosen a sheep for $50 (from Plan Canada). A sheep benifits a family because it provedes wool, milk, cheese, and after death, meat. The milk, cheese and wool also provides income for the family. As you can see I have decided to split my funds for seperate items- $50 dollars for a sheep, $35 dollars for 50 trees, and $15 for 3 baby chicks- instead of just spending my money on one thing, for a bunch of the same thing.

The It Gets Better Project.

...Hi...

I know. I have not posted for a very, very long time. But, hey, you'll get over it. Anyways, this is complicated. Mostly, my classmates are all doing the same thing. What happens is you have to check out this website called the "It Gets Better Project". The It Gets Better Project is a website that helps spread the message about how LGBTQ (Lesbian, gay, bi, trans, and questioning) people have hope, and how they can live like straight people- not being bullied and taunted about their sexuality. So, to spread the message, you go on the website and sign a pledge. It's simple but it helps support LGBTQ people a bunch. If you'd like you can visit the website right here at The It Gets Better Project. All the explaining about the website aside, there's more to the assignment than signing a pledge. We had to pick a YouTube video to watch by a famous person talking about the Project. Then, we had to create a Publice Service Announcement. Oh, joy. You see, what happened here was a roadblock, let's say. I hate my voice on tape, and so I didn't want to do this assignment from the start. So, this whole thing went over and in the end, I still have to do it, but my public service announcement will not be on the blog. Well, it will, but I won't be talking, like the other students. It will be typed. Anyways, here is what I'm going to say about this.

Hi, my name is Breah. I am in the 8th grade, and I am going to talk about bullying-related issues. Bullying is something that should be avoided. There are many forms of bullying, but I am going to talk about LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans-gender, and questioning) bullying. In my opinion LGBTQ bullying is the worst kind. It is unfair and cruel to taunt someone based on the gender of people they are attracted to. Put yourself in their shoes. You live a normal life (in a way). You're a nice person and didn't do anything to any one. But, there's a catch. You're staright. Almost everyone else is gay, lesbian, bi, or trans-gender. Once you come out of the closet, people never seem to stop taunting and bullying you. How would you feel now? Would you feel like an LGBTQ person? Soon, after seriously considering suicide, you come upon a "Straight Rights Supporter". They tell you about the straight people whose lives got better. They also tell you about the straight people that lost their lives due to being bullied about their choices. Would you pick the path to live your life, and see that it gets better? Or would you choose the path where nothing gets better? Now, I'm finished with role playing. But, even I thought that it was alot harder with a couple of seconds of role playing. Not being an LGBTQ, I wouldn't know what it's like at all. But still, it's not a reason to end your life if it will get better.

Well, thanks for reading this... Public service announcement. Don't be afraid to comment if it's corny. I think it is. I shan't be offended. Anways, thanks!

An Emily Dickenson Poem Assignment

Oh, Hi there you wonderful people who read my blog.

This time, it's difficult. It's not an extremely hard assignment or anything, it's just that, well, if you don't exactly, totally, fully understand the poem it's pretty hard. And that's the case with me. You see, what you have to do is respond to the poem any way you like, and say what it means to you, and how it should be applied to our society. But, eh, I'm not fully sure what it means, so I'm sorry if this sucks. Anyways here I go...

Opinion is a flitting thing,
but truth outlasts the sun--
if we cannot own them both--
posses the oldest one.

Now, I'm pretty sure that it means that you can have your opinion but make sure the truth is what your opinion is based on. As I've said, I don't really understand what it means, because I actually have no idea what, A) the truth has to do with your opinion or B) what the oldest one is. Is it the truth, or opinion? I just don't know that one, sorry. Don't get me wrong, I like how the poem is written, but I just don't get it. Anyways, the next thing is that we are supposed to do is tell you, my splendiferous followers, is how we can apply this to our society. I think that people, including myself, will always have their own opinions. But, the truth will always come out in the end. I think, keeping that in mind, we would have a more truthful society.

Oh jeez. That was not easy, in fact, that was very confusing, and it took me alot longer than usual to write. I'm not a poem person. Anyways, enough of my rambling.

All About The Trumpet.

Diagram of the Trumpet
 Well, hello there.

Our Next assignment: one that has something to do with our instruments. Oh, I don't know too much about my trumpet, (Like how to play it...) since I have just picked it this year. But! After this assignment. I will. Oh, I will (I probably still won't have played it or anything...) know everything. Well, not that much. But a fair amount. :) Anyways, here is the joyful read that you await.

The name of the instrument that I play is the trumpet, which is part of the brass family.
The names of all the parts of the instrument are: the mouthpiece, the mouthpiece receiver, the valves (there are 3), the hook, the third valve slide, the water key, the third valve slide ring, the second valve slide, the first valve slide, and the valve casings. The clef that my instrument plays in is the treble clef. The time when the trumpet was first discovered was in the time of King Tut, proven by the instrument being found in his tomb. Which, in short was in the 1400's.
The people who invented the trumpet are not specified, but are most likely someone who did so in Egypt. The trumpet makes a sound of a high pitch, and probably has since the invention of it. You make a sound with this instrument by buzzing your lips on the mouthpiece which creates a vibration through the tube. But, before you play, you must assemble it, by gently putting the mouthpiece inside the body of the trumpet in the place where it belongs.
You sterilize the mouthpiece by putting it into a bucket of warm water with dish soap or sterilizing product.  You maintain the instrument by using the water key to empty the water from the instrument, wiping the trumpet with a clean soft cloth, oiling the valves, and greasing the sides regularly. You must also sterilize the mouthpiece often.

Thanks for reading all about the trumpet, and come back soon for a new post.

The "Golden" Rule

Why Hi There.

This time, our assignment is to answer a couple of questions about The Golden Rule. You may have noticed that I have put "Golden" into quotation marks in my title. The reason for this is I do not agree with The "Golden" rule. Shocking, I know. No, I am not saying that all people should be mean to each other. I am just saying that I don't like the general concept of that rule. I don't like it because it can go both ways. Yes my friends, both ways. I mean, sure, people act good to you, act good to them, it's simple. But, if people act badly to you, are you supposed to be nice to them? What, you think that just because you don't lose it and act nice to them, that they'll be nice to you? They were already being mean to you!  Anyways, as you may have seen in my "Tolerance and Discrimination :)" post, I said the same thing. So, as you may see, I didn't get this idea very recently. So, anyways, into the specifics. We have to answer 4 questions. I have chosen to do the following, because they are the ones that I can answer, disagreeing with the rule, and all. 1. "What is the message of the Golden Rule?", 2."Which expression of the Golden Rule do you like the best? Why?", 3."What could things be like if everyone behaved according to the Golden Rule", 4."Why is it that sometimes we don't behave according to the Golden Rule?". My favorite? The last. You know why. Anyways, off to the answers.

1. The message of The "Golden" Rule is that you have to act in a certain way to people, if you would like them to treat you the same way (As I said, both ways!).

2. The expression of The "Golden" Rule that I like the most is the Native Spirituality one, which is, "We are as much alive as we keep the earth alive". It's my favorite because it makes the most sense to me. What I mean is that we can't be alive if the earth isn't, and so, brings the quote. I also like this expression because it applies more to nature, and you may think I'm obsessed now, but it can't go both ways, which I like of course.

3. Personally for this one, I'd have to say that it almost wouldn't change at all. I bet tons and tons of people out there are acting by The "Golden" Rule, and some of them not even knowing it. I'm saying this because everyone wants to be treated differently, and if you're angry, happy, excited, or sad, everything changes. People want to be treated differently in different moods also.

4. Ah, this one is very easy. I think that people don't behave according to The "Golden" Rule because, as I said in question 3, when your in a different mood, everything changes. I have a scenario here. Let's say that you're angry at someone, for whatever reason, and you are just so mad, let's just say it's pretty much "blind rage". So, you are both being verbally attacked at this point. Now that you aren't really paying attention to what you say, this 'treating others like you want to be treated' business isn't so important now is it?

Well, now that you, my wonderful friends/acquaintances have finished reading my rant, I think it's fair for me to bid you:

My Name.

Oh, Bloggers. Hi.

Our newest assignment is to go to these wonderful websites which lets you search your name. I thank Behind The Name for telling me my name doesn't exist. Same goes for Baby Names. So, I had to use a variation, which is Bree. Alright, so here it is...

Behind my name, Bree.

Before I started this assignment, I had no idea what my name meant, as for me never being able to find it. So, um, not much to say there.
I actually don't know why my parents chose my name for me  because I always get two stories, and since I don't know, I'm not sure who to believe.
After searching on Baby Names I learned that my name means "The exalted one." Oh, sure. Just so you know, 'exalted' means Praised, or honored; Noble, sublime. (Thanks, google!). If you know me, you are most likely to know that I am far from any of those things. In fact, to be heard by a group of people larger than three, in a conversation at recess or something like that, I usually have to shout. Therefore drawing the conclusion that I am, in fact, barely paid attention to. So, I must disagree, and say that I am not exalted. Sorry Gaelic natives. Now I would love to say that I learned something cool or interesting in my search, but they don't have much to say about my first name, or middle name (Which is completely abnormal also, my middle name is Camilla, which I like a good deal, because it sounds like caramel.). Yep, they gave me the meaning of the name and decided that there is not enough people with that name to actually put research into it. I am also not sure where to find my last name meaning, so, sorry folks, I got nothing for you there either. Now, I can't say my name exactly does or doesn't suit me, I just don't know. I know how pitiful that must be, not to know if my own name suits me or not, but there's just something about it that leaves me undecided. If I could have the option to give myself a new name I wouldn't. I would definitely want a really weird name, and, at the current moment, and probably for a very long time, I won't be able to think of a weird enough name to suit me. Or definitely one that I like.

Anyways, thanks a bunch for reading that (boring) post, and come back soon for a new post! :D
